Former Delhi University Professor G N Saibaba Passes Away After Surgery

G N Saibaba professor at Delhi University, who was accuted earlier this year after spending nearly 10 years in prison for  alleged maoist links, passed away on Saturday evening. The 57 year old died due to complications after surgery for gallbladder stones.

Health Complications and Treatment in Hyderabad

Wheelchair- bound Saibaba  had been receiving treatment at nizam’s Institute of medical sciences (NIMS)  in Hyderabad. he was admitted there 10 days ago due to severe health issues. According to His aides,  he suffered a heart attack around 8pm on Saturday and was declared Dead by 8:30 p.m.

Legal Battle and Release From Prison

Saibaba, who was an English professor, was released from Nagpur central jail this year after being acquitted by the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court on March 5.  He was previously arrested in 2014 on accusations of being linked to Maoist groups,  including the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist).

Close Friends Speak About His Last Days 

Deepak Kumar, a close family friend  and member of the Defense committee that supported SAI Baba’s release, Share’s details of his last days.  Kumar mentioned that SAI Baba had been in severe pain due to his gallbladder  before being admitted to NIMS. The surgery to remove his gallbladder was successful,  and Saibaba seemed to be recovering when they last spoke on October 6. However, his health started to decline again around October 7.

Saibaba’s Desire To Continue His Work For Human Rights

Saibaba was hopeful of recovering and returning to his work in human rights. He had expressed his desire to continue teaching and fighting for human rights even after being released.  He was also fighting to regain his job at Delhi University, with the last hearing of the case happening in September 2023.

Remembering Saibaba’s Legacy

Nandita Narain, A former DU professor and close family friend, expressed her grief at his passing. She remarked that it was a tragic loss, especially after Saibaba had just returned home following his acquittal. She emphasized that his courage and Legacy should be remembered.

Arrest and Allegations of Maoist Links

SAI Baba was arrested in 2014 by the Gadchiroli  police in Maharashtra,  along with other accused individuals.  the authorities claimed that he was a member of the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist)  and it’s affiliate group,  The revolutionary democratic front.  he was accused of facilitating meetings between JNU student Hem Mishra,  journalist Prashant Rahi,  and other members of the banned organizations.
