Former Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who has been serving a six-month prison sentence, was granted early release today, according to the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS).
Bainimarama began his one-year sentence in May of this year, after being convicted by the Suva High Court on a charge of attempting to obstruct justice.
The FCS stated that the decision to grant early release followed a detailed review of his application. This review process adhered strictly to the legal guidelines governing early release and supervised reintegration.
Under Section 46 (3) of the Corrections Act, inmates may qualify for early release if specific criteria are met, ensuring both public safety and effective reintegration support. The FCS confirmed that Bainimarama’s eligibility, conditions for release, and supervisory measures were all thoroughly evaluated according to FCS regulations.
The FCS will continue to monitor Bainimarama’s reintegration to ensure he adheres to all conditions tied to his release. They emphasized that this decision aligns with the FCS’s commitment to principles of justice, rehabilitation, and reintegration as outlined in the Corrections Act.
