The 2024 Nobel peace prize has been awarded to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japenese group representing survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings. The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized the group for its significant efforts inadvocating for a world without nuclear weapons.
joergen Watne Frydnes, the Chair of te Nobel committee, praised the group for its contribution to establishing what he called the “nuclear taboo,” referring to the global understanding that nuclear weapons should never be used. he warned, however, that this taboo is currently under threat.
Founded in 1956, nihon Hidankyo has worked tirelessly to share the stories of atomc bomb survivors, highlighting the immense suffering caused by nuclear weapons. Survivors travel worlwide to educate others on the devastating impact of nuclear attacks, aiming to prevent such tragedies from happening again.
The decision to award the prize to Nihon Hidankyo comes amid speculation about other potential nominees. some believed that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA), which provides aid to Palestinians, was under consideration. However, controversy surrounded UNWRA due to the alleged involvement of some of its members in the Hamas attack on Israel in October 2023. A petition with the Nobel committee not to award the prize to UNWRA.
Another potential nominee was the International Court of Justice, which is currently examining claims of genocide in Gaza and has called Israeli authorities to avoid genocidal actions.
In total, 286 candidates were nominated for the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, including 197 individuals and 89 organizations. nominations are submitted by those in influential positions, such as members of governments and international courts.
Last year’s prize went to Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi for her work in fighting the oppression of women in Iran.
